When it comes to coffee, there are two main species that dominate the market: Arabica and Robusta. While Arabica is often hailed as the popular choice, Robusta coffee has its own unique characteristics and benefits.
At VietFive, we strive to share with the world why Robusta is the superior choice!
What is Robusta Coffee?
Robusta coffee is the second most widely grown coffee species in the world, accounting for approximately 40% of global coffee production. Robusta coffee plants are hardier and more resistant to diseases and pests compared to Arabica plants, making them easier to cultivate.
Robusta coffee plants thrive in lower altitudes and warmer climates, whereas Arabica plants prefer higher altitudes and cooler temperatures. Our robusta coffee grows on our red volcanic soil farm in the Central Highlands of Vietnam.
The Benefits of Robusta Coffee
While Arabica coffee may be the preferred choice for many coffee enthusiasts, Robusta coffee offers its own set of benefits:
1. Higher Energizing Kick: If you're looking for a coffee that packs a punch, Robusta is the way to go. Its higher caffeine content provides a more energizing effect, making it an ideal choice for those who need an extra boost. On average, in the US, an average coffee drinker drinks 3 cups of coffee a day. Robusta can provide the same energizing effect in about half the coffee consumption!
2. Rich and Bold Flavor: Robusta coffee's strong and robust flavor profile can be a delight for those who prefer a more direct coffee experience. It pairs well with our sweetened condensed milk and is often used in espresso blends to add depth and body -- even though it is not transparently labeled!
3. Lower Acidity: Robusta coffee has a lower acidity level compared to Arabica, which can be beneficial for individuals who experience digestive issues or acid reflux after consuming coffee.
4. Higher Antioxidants: Studies have shown that Robusta coffee can contain up to 2-3 times more antioxidants than Arabica coffee. Robusta coffee is particularly rich in chlorogenic acids, which are a type of polyphenol antioxidant. Chlorogenic acids have been linked to various health benefits, including reducing inflammation, improving blood sugar control, and protecting against certain types of cancer. Additionally, Robusta coffee also contains other antioxidants such as caffeic acid and quinic acid.
Whether you prefer the bold flavors, higher caffeine content, lower acidity, or higher antioxidants. Robusta coffee is worth exploring for any coffee lover looking to expand their horizons.
